Opening of the Exhibition

"Conquering Conflict through Creation: The Power of a Child's Canvas"

A Children's Art Exhibition by SOS Children's Villages

This one-of-a-kind art exhibition about International Children's Rights was created from the unique perspectives of the actual children themselves…
The exhibition's newly-debuted artists are young Palestinian youth from the SOS Herman Gmeiner School & SOS Children's Village in Bethlehem.
They are a part of a global network of SOS Children's Villages, a social development organization concerned about all children, particularly those who have no parental care and those whose families have to live in difficult conditions. The basis and aim of their work is to respect, promote and stand up for children's rights, in the spirit of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.

The featured artwork hopes to prove "children's powerful capacity to be actors of change", specifically for the future of the Middle East. Each young artist successfully expresses his or her own vision and message about the importance of Children's Rights within their artwork, using the United Nations Convention on the Rights of a Child as their starting point for creation. Thus, the goal of the exhibition is to empower children with the knowledge they need (with paintbrush in hand) to stand up for their own rights and actively take part in the decision-making processes that affect their lives. The collection of artworks has the ability to really influence audiences dramatically, by compelling its art onlookers to see the world through the mind of the child artist.

With villages in 132 countries & territories around the world, SOS Children's Villages is an independent, non-governmental and social development organization, which has been active in the field of children's rights and committed to children's needs & concerns since 1949. The SOS Hermann Gmeiner Schools extend, assist and continue the pedagogical support provided in the SOS Children's Villages. The SOS Herman Gmeiner School in Bethlehem is open to children from the SOS Children's Village and the neighboring districts.

Further information about the SOS Children's Villages and Herman Gmeiner Schools can be found at

This Children's Art Exhibition is the first step towards a Collaborative Art Program that the Willy Brandt Center is currently developing with SOS Children's Villages amongst the Middle East Region. The prospective aim of the Joint-Efforts of SOS Children's Villages & Willy Brandt Center is to use Children's Rights as the joining force & common ground of influence, for creating more collaborative events in the near future.

On occasion of the opening the children's music class from the Silwan Comunity Center Maada will perform a special musical program.

The children's painting workshop was part of the "Bright Stars" program of the International Center of Bethlehem (ICB) www.annadwa.org.
