The Palestinian Women Way
Empowering Palestinian Women to Fully Participate in the Political Arena
A project of the
Friedrich Ebert Fondation in
co-operation with the Willy Brandt Center
by Sheerin Alaraj, Shabeebeh Fatah
Historically, Palestinian women have been politically active in the
national struggle for liberation, justice and human rights. During the 20
year period between the begining of the Israeli occupation and the first
Intifada in 1987, women were the primary source behind political and
social mobilization.
Today, the political opportunities facing the Palestinian people as a
whole are great. The January elections promise the beginning of a new era.
Unfortunately, the confidence of women in the political process has
diminished significantely over the last years. But it is critical for
Palestinian women to establish their place and rights within this new
political reality.
