The Willy Brandt Center Jerusalem and the Goethe Institut Jerusalem have
the the unique opportunity to show a selection of Henry Ries’ photo
series “Rothschild Hospital” and “Exodus” for the first time ever
in Israel.
Henry Ries, born 1917 in Berlin, emigrated to the USA in 1938. From 1947-51
he worked as a photo journalist for The New York Times in Europe. He
died on May, 24th 2004.
About this exhibition:
The suffering of the Jewish survivors of the Holocaust was not over yet
on May 8th 1945, the day of liberation from National Socialism, and the End
of the Second World War.
Vienna’s Rothschild Hospital was after the war a makeshift refugee camp
and the center of Jewish life. There, the emigrants could exchange ideas
and discuss any further steps that should lead to Palestine. Some waited
for the establishment of a Jewish state, while others tried to immegrate
illegally..
In the summer of 1947, steered the ship "Exodus" illegally to
Palestine, and was forced by the British Military Police to return to
Europe. In the port of Hamburg, the passengers were forcibly brought ashore
and taken to the Displaced Persons camp Pöppendorf. Despite the fact
that the press has been barred from recording the plight of the refugees,
Henry Ries managed to capture this continuing tragedy in his
photographs.

The exhibition is curated by Cheb Kammerer (artistic director, WBC) in
collaboration with Wanda Ries (the widow of Henry Ries), Simone Lenz
(Director of the Goethe-Institut Tel Aviv) and Gisela Kayser (curator at
the Willy Brandt Haus Berlin).

מרכז ווילי ברנדט בירושלים ומכון גטה בירושלים גאים להציג באופן בלעדי את אוסף הצילומים של הנרי ריס "בית חולים רוטשילד" ו"אקסודוס" בפעם הראשונה בישראל. פתיחת התערוכות במאי 2011.
הנרי ריס, יליד 1917 מברלין, היגר לארצות הברית בשנת 1938. בין השנים 1947-51 עבד כצלם-עיתונאי עבור הניו יורק טיימס באירופה. צילומיו הם תיעוד מרשים של גורלם של העקורים, היהודים ניצולי מחנות הריכוז ושל הפליטים ממזרח אירופה.
לאחר המלחמה בית החולים "רוטשילד"
בווינה היה למחנה פליטים מאולתר ומרכז של
חיים יהודיים בו חיו רבים בצפייה
ובתקווה.
בקיץ 1947, הספינה "אקסודוס" הובילה
אלפי פליטים יהודים באופן בלתי חוקי
לפלסטינה, אך אולצה לחזור לאירופה על ידי
המשטרה הצבאית הבריטית.
למרות העובדה כי נאסר על העיתונות לתעד את
מצוקתם של הפליטים, הצליח הנרי ריס ללכוד
את הטרגדיה המתמשכת בצילומים שלו.

מהמוזיאון ההיסטורי הגרמני בברלין ומוצג
באדיבות הניו יורק טיימס.
צ'ב קמרר (המנהל האמנותי, WBC) אצר את התערוכה
בשיתוף עם וונדה ריס (אלמנתו של הנרי ריס),
סימון לנץ (מנהל מכון גתה תל אביב), וכן
ג'יזלה קייזר (אוצרת בבית ווילי ברנדט,
ברלין).
התערוכה תתקיים במרכז ווילי ברנדט
בירושלים ובמכון גתה בירושלים.

يسر مركز ويلي برندت ومركز غوته أن يعرضا مجموعة صور من أعمال المصور هنري ريس، صور تعرض لأول مرة في البلاد. حيث سيتم عرض سلستان صوريتان بعنوان "مستشفى روتشيلد" و "الخروج/ اكسودوس"
ولد هنري ريس في برلين عام 1917، وهاجر الى أمريكا عام 1938. عمل بين الأعوام 1947-1961 مصوراُ في صحيفة نيويورك تايمز في أوروبا. صوره الفذة وثقت مصير النازحين، الناجين من معسكرات الإبادة والمهاجرين من أوروبا الشرقية في تلك الحقبة.
بعد ان وضعت الحرب أوزارها تحول مستشفى
روتشلد في فيينا لفترة مؤقتة الى مخيم
للاجئين ومركزاً ليهود أوروبا ورمزاً
للانتظار والأمل. ففي صيف عام 1947، تحركت
السفينة (الخروج/اكسودوس) باتجاه فلسطين
وعلى متنها المهاجرين اليهود بصورة غير
قانونية، حيث تم منعها من دخول الموانئ
الفلسطينية من قبل الجيش البريطاني حينها
وأمرها بالرجوع الى أوروبا. بالرغم من منع
التغطية الاعلامية لمحنة اللاجئين استطاع
المصور هنري ريس في التقاط مجموعة من الصور
تعرض استمرارية المأساة.
لقد تم استعارة المجموعة الصورية من
المتحف التاريخي الألماني في برلين برعاية
نيويورك تايمز. سوف يتم عرض سلسلة الصور
"الخروج/اكسودوس" في مركز ويلي برندت،
وسلسلة "مستشفى روتشيلد" في مركز غوته
في القدس. سوف تحضر أرملة المصور واندا ريس
حفل الافتتاح.
